Release your inner artist at Helmsley Walled Garden

A pair of exciting artists are running courses at Helmsley Walled Garden this summer. Bridget Gillespie will be teaching monthly two day botanical illustration courses and willow weaver Anthea Firth will be showing course participants how to weave everything from pigs and dragonflies to stars and owls. Booking is essential. Bridget’s next course is on August 15th and 16th. Anthea’s next course is on September 5th.

RHS Gold medal winner Bridget Gillespie has painted botanical illustrations for over seventeen years. She’s been teaching at Helmsley Walled Garden for over ten years, developing the skills of local amateur artists. It’s doesn’t matter whether you’re a complete beginner looking to try something new or wanting to develop your botanical illustration skills further. The combination of Bridget’s tuition and the wealth of flowers available in the Garden means it’s the perfect place to come to for botanical illustration.

Anthea Firth has run willow weaving classes for the last ten years. She originally trained as an artist and has worked in environmental education for the North York Moors National Park Authority for 14 years. She likes to work with small classes to be able to give a high level of teaching time to every participant. Anthea’s philosophy is that no-one is allowed out of the door without a finished piece of work they can be proud of!

Tricia Harris, Marketing Manager said “ ‘We are delighted to be welcoming back both Bridget and Anthea for another year of teaching at Helmsley Walled Garden. Their courses are fun and instructive and everyone who attends will go away with a piece of art and a sense of achievement.’ “

Bridget Gillespie said “ ‘Helmsley Walled Garden provides the perfect backdrop for a class in botanical illustration. Everyone will be able to find a plant they want to paint whether they are a beginner or have some experience.’ ”

Anthea Firth said “ ‘I love being able to give people the means to weave something for their garden be it a dragonfly or an owl. Complete beginners are welcome and all materials and equipment are provided.’ ”

Botanical illustration with Bridget Gillespie cost £75 per two day stand-alone course. Willow weaving with Anthea Firth costs £45 per day course or £50 for the ‘Weave a Pig’ day. Go to www.helmsleywalledgarden.org.uk to our courses page, for full details of each course and how to book.
