Week 4/5: Development of the peony garden continues and as you can see from the photographs so has the application of farmyard manure. Just after Christmas as the frozen weather broke we ordered 20 tons of manure. Its all gone so another load has been ordered.

Raised beds in The Growing and Learning Area

Preparing a plot ready to grow vegetables and salad for the Vinehouse Cafe

Other work: We have started to clear an unused area ready to transfer the raspberries to. The area cleared of raspberries will become our new clematis garden although for this year it will be sufficient to clear and prepare the ground ready for development in the autumn. Ben and Tony have move a mature Sorbus aria ‘Helmleyii’ tree to a more suitable position. Our training courses for volunteers and staff have resumed with a look at Weeds, Pests and Disease. This coming week we take a look at pruning fruit.
The hot beds temp is now at 8C and weed seed is starting to germinate on top an indication that we will soon be able to sow vegetables. However, in the greenhouse, dispite killing two mice, they have still managed to eat one tray of broad beans, more protection required.

Happy gardening,

Week 3: The main piece of work this week has involved the replanting of The Peony Garden. During last Autumn the area was cleared of all couch grass and other weeds. The peonies were saved and are now being replaced together with a selection of garden trees each of which will have interesting bark.

Replanting of the Peony Garden

This area of the garden is being planted up to give flower and shrub interest during the spring season followed by good autumn leaf colour.

In late summer/early autumn spring flowering bulbs will be added to this garden.

Other updates, the temerature by the hotbeds this week are Open Ground -1c, Air Temp -2c and the first hotbed +2c, a difference of 3c and 1c higher than last weeks difference. Whilst weed seed is germinating in the hot bed it is still to early for us to sow vegetables.

Just before Xmas, on each Wednesday we started having a community meal James, Sarah and Fiona have been creating a sselection of soups for all the staff and volunteers to enjoy. This weeks highlight was a rice pudding. As you can see Pete certainly did enjoy it not much left to wash!!

Pete cleaning up

Week 1/2: Work on creating hotboxes in readiness for growing some early vegetables.

Gemma and Tess, two students from Askham Bryan College just about to start on creating the second hot bed. Each bed is being built in an old set of coldframes. After digging out the top soil and putting to one side the frames are filled with fresh farmyard manure. After compacting the manure the top soil is replaced and the glass frames put in place. The first hot bed can be seen behind Tess and Gemma.

As the bacteria in the manure increases to start to rot down the manure they generate heat, that heat should heat up the soil we placed on top of the manure.

Double digging of cold frames

We checked the temperatures this morning they are: Open Ground -2c, Air Temp -2c and our first hotbox 0c. Still early days should take 2 to 3 weeks to show a real difference in temperature. When we have the temperature upto the 11c mark we will be able to sow vegetables direct. In the mean time making use of the greenhouses to get some broad beans started. Chitting of potatoes started earlier in the week.
