Formerly the Peony Garden, this area had become sadly overgrown with couch grass and bindweed and in need of a radical overhaul. Starting in 2011, the area was cleared and thoroughly dug over. New trees such as Betula albosinsensis ‘Septentrionalis’ and Sorbus acuparia ‘Beissneri’ were planted in the lawn and beds to give height and movement, and in time shady areas to sit under. Mass plantings of asters were put in amongst the Daphne mezeurum rubrum and Deutzia scabra ‘Candidissima’ to give a rich display of purples and blues as autumn approaches. Planting continues in this garden so come and see how it develops.
