Creativity and Mindfulness Retreat
Course tutors – Clare Belbin and Lauri Bower
Helmsley Walled Garden provides a superb setting for exploring our relationship with nature through words and images. On each of these two days we can spend time discovering a new way of creating, through drawing and poetry, by using mindfulness as the foundation.
Each day includes gentle mindfulness practices that will enable and support a playful approach to your drawing and poetry, through the qualities of patience, trust and openness.
Refreshments and entry to the Walled Garden are included in the ticket price; please bring your own lunch (i.e a sandwich).
This provides an ideal opportunity to:
- Leave behind the busyness of daily life and set aside some time to refresh yourself through the creative pursuits of drawing and poetry.
- Tune into what feels right for you
- Explore the benefits of mindfulness
The Orchid House in the Garden will be our indoor space for meeting, with the whole of the Garden and it’s different areas available for our creativity.
Who Can Attend
This event is suitable for anyone who wishes to explore mindfulness as a fresh approach to creativity, which can be expanded to all areas of life. Tuition will be provided in mindfulness as well as the craft skills of drawing and poetry. The day will happily accommodate those who practice regularly as well as those new to drawing, poetry or mindfulness. Beginners and the terrified are all welcome!
Come for one day (Saturday) or book for the weekend and stay overnight in Helmsley (to be booked separately by yourself).
The two tutors who lead the weekend are experienced practitioners.
Clare Belbin is the artist-in-residence at Helmsley Walled Garden and can often be found painting in the garden. She studied Fine Art at Newcastle University and completed her postgraduate in Drawing & Painting at Edinburgh College of Art, exhibiting regularly since then. For twenty-five years, Clare has drawn and painted in two walled gardens. Her work is a daily, animated study through the seasons – winter earth, first shoots, blossom, fruit and leaf fall. This constant change generates a natural curiosity for her to search for ever more fresh observation. Clare has been fully committed to her practice of mindfulness for over ten years. www.clarebelbin.com
Dr. Lauri Bower has 30 years’ experience of meditation practice and 15 years of running and organising retreats. She has recently completed a Ph.D. on Mindfulness and Engaged Buddhism; the key teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh. This work has evolved into teaching Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction courses with York MBSR (http://www.yorkmbsr.co.uk), in the Yorkshire and Humberside region. She has always engaged with creative pursuits in sewing, dressmaking, embroidery, calligraphy, jewellery and bookbinding and has more recently discovered how the practice of mindfulness informs her poetry writing. She regularly posts poems to her Mindful Living blog http://lauribower.blogspot.co.uk/
